Reversing sensors
« on: 07 December 2022, 05:49:25 PM »
Today I repaired my reversing sensors. Only one needed doing. Simplest job ever, took ten minutes, eight of which were painting said sensor to match the bumper. Result. Beep beep.

It's usually a problem with the sensors themselves. If you have access to a Tech-II it will identify which sensor is out of action. Changeout is actually quite easy, using a small flat screwdrive prise out the sensor and disconnect at the plug. There is a holder for the sensor which just slots onto the sensor itself. Sensors can be found on the Bay of Plenty.

Ah, I thought there was some repair done to the sensors

WIS states it's a bumper off jobbie, which is what I have always done for fear of damaging the bumper / retaining clips

My 08 "twin" has a SPA fail warning, maybe that will give me some practice

The sensor fixings changed around 2005.  The later ones are supposed to be “bumper off”, but they are not well secured and mine could be eased out without removing any body parts.

Some of the earlier ones have a collar.  The WIS states that you push the sensor in a bit and that allows the sensor and collar to be released and come out together.  I tried that on the old 9-5 but couldn’t seem to push hard enough to move the sensor.

That usually means it is a sensor, I just got mine working on a 9-3, took me a while to cotton onto the fact that an 'SPA Malfunction' could be a sensor, but that's what it was in the end, the sensor was shorting the supply voltage to the earth return.

I suppose I need to threaten it with the Tech II to discover what's really wrong with it. Maybe tomorrow...

Yes that sounds like a plan, although when I had a chap look at mine with his Tech II it did not provide any real indication of the faulty sensor because being a short CCT it was shorting the entire voltage sensing circuit to earth.  I think a faulty sensor can only be detected when it goes open-circuit, at which point you would get a 'sensor disconnected' or similar message (have a look on WIS for more).  If you have a look on our other Saab forum site you will see my thread there on Saab SPA fitment issue (albeit for a 9-3) where I recorded pin to pin measurements for a good and bad sensor (using a MM on diode test function).  I have spare 9-5 sensors somewhere BTW :)

Good luck
