Wing mirror adjustment not working...
« on: 29 March 2013, 03:09:13 PM »
Hello all.
I have had a search for the answer to this but to no avail.

The adjustment switches on my drivers door no longer adjust my wing mirrors.
They became briefly intermittent then stopped completely.
All fuses have been checked and are ok.
The fact that both have packed up at the same time tends to suggest its not the motors.

Anyone with experience of this?

Many thanks.

hmmm....they do have a tendency to stop working after a certain length of time...
As you say, if fuses are okay it implies motor, but odd they might both stop - perhaps something in the adjusting "unit" on the door.....
My passenger one currently no longer tilts down on request....no idea how to fix it :-(

Sorry, not much help

Haha, thanks anyway Mike IOW.
The fact that both have stopped is a little odd.  Have been digging some more and will look at the selector switch next as apparently this can be a problem.  There was an occasion when the drivers side stopped working, but the motor worked, turned out the mirror wasn't seated properly...

The switch in the drivers door gums up and quits working.

Not that difficult to remove the switch, take it apart and clean the old dried grease out of it.  Get the brass bits good and clean, add just a bit of lubricant and reassemble.

Thanks win_k, the switch appears to function ok, (i.e. rocks left and right smoothly) but will have a closer look...

And (although the 'coincidence' of both failing together makes this unlikely) I found that mine were simply physically gummed-up.

Solution: knock off the plastic shroud, remove all the dead leaves, spiders' webs and general crud from inside then spray the 'ball joint' and surround with loads of WD40 and work that joint by hand vigorously up/down/left/right and around & around through 360* to its fullest extent several times.

Worked for me!  (And saved me the cost of the motors and switches I had been quoted for.)

Thanks AdvancedRoadcraft, will try that next.  Have had the switch off expecting to find something obvious, but it all appears ok, switch and thumbwheel appear smooth and no obvious signs of why it's suddenly packed up.
It's a minor irritation, but my minor irritations with my beloved 93 are approaching double figures now....!

Had the same symptoms on mine, switch appeared to be fine but I took it apart anyway, had a fiddle, re-installed
and it worked partially.

Took it apart again and this time I cleaned up all the little contacts in the rubber switch mount until they were bright metal and it now functions normally.

Give it a go, you've got nothing to loose if they're not working.

Happy to say I now have adjusting wing mirrors again!

I did remove the switch again and carefully took it apart.  I must say that it was absolutely spotless, apart from a thin clear gel like substance on the circuit board, (lube?).  None of the expected dirt or gunk at all.  I gave it a wipe, reassembled it and hey presto it works again.  I'm assuming the clear gel is the lube to keep the switch from seizing up, but wiping it away appeared to solve it.  Will see how it behaves for a while then maybe apply some lube if it starts getting sticky.

1 gremlin defeated, now on to sort out the ACC module....!

Many thanks to all, Hawkwind, AdvancedRoadcraft, win_k and MikeIOW for replying and helping me out with this.
