What have I done?
« on: 01 August 2011, 02:49:04 AM »
As mentioned in the "What car would you have if it wasn't a Saab" thread, I've been thinking about an old-school V8.

So today I put a deposit on this:

It's a '74 Charger in need of a fair amount of TLC.  But it's all there, including the recently-rebuilt 360ci V8.

Wish me luck ... :D

Looks like it will paint up nice enough! Body looks quite level, be nice to see how it develops  :)

Not sure if we can embed but in the meantime here's a quick clip just before we put it on the tow truck yesterday to bring it home.  Makes the most wonderful noise ...

Oh! Dang!!!! :(

I forgot about this post today when I was out photographing at Croxley today.  There was a modified Charger there, complete with big bonnet scoop!!

But no photo of it.......

But all the American cars were well restored.

This is the best I can do...

Just watched that but can't listen to it as I'm at work. :(

How long do you think the restoration will take?

Thanks, sgould, those are lovely.  Especially the Corvair, I've had a hankering for one of those for a while but you don't see many.

Kev - first step it to get it legal and safe.  Brakes, mostly, plus little things like a new boot lock (sorry, "trunk" :D ).  Then I'll run it around for a bit as is, to get a sense of anything major that needs done on the oily side.  It'll be off to the body shop after that, which is the real unknown - there could be all sorts of horrors under the filler and primer, depending how well the half-restoration has been done.  Interior will be last, but it's in pretty good shape anyway.  It's never going to be a show car, but I'm hoping for a tidy, presentable daily driver by Christmas.

Good luck with the project James.

To this day, since given a toy one as a child, the 1959 Chevrolet Imala Sport Coupe  remains my favourite Spank-Tank. The rear end is pure art.

But be careful driving - no American cars handle well...

that's a turn up for the books James.

We're all seeing what best fuel economy we can get out of our cars and you've bought one where they measure it in gallons to the mile!!!!!

Have you got links to a petrol company or a deep pocket for daily drive -  ;)

The Corvair - rear engined, target for Ralph Nader, but beautiful car.

Ah, memories. In the late sixties my hobby, and that of my best pal - before we discovered beer and girls - was plastic model kits of all kinds. The American companies Revell and Monogram had a big range of 1/24th scale cars - Dodge Charger, Oldsmobile Toronado, Mk 1 Mustang, Corvette, Plymouth Barracuda, Studebaker Avanti, and on, and on. Far more advanced than Airfix- these kits had chrome plated parts!

The sixties was a golden age for US car body design, IMHO. (Not so sure about the handling, leaf springs being the order of the day.)
