9-3 SID differences
« on: 08 February 2012, 10:43:17 AM »
Hi,

I have the usual missing pixels issue on the SID on my 9-3.  I'm aware that I can get it fixed for about £50, but I was wondering what others options are available.

What are the differences between the different SIDs?

I quite like the look of the SID with the analogue clock on the left hand side (I think I had one on my GM900).  Will one of those work in my 9-3 Turbo Conv?

Thanks,

Mike

This is the one I have at the moment ... showing the state of the pixels.

Honestly, I don't think you've got much of a choice.  Either get your current one repaired or replace with a used similar unit.

I don't have any direct hands on, but I've read that neither the earlier NG900 nor the simpler 4 button OG9-3 SID's are plug and play.

I suspect if you had both a 4 button SID and it's wiring pig tail, you should be able to use the wiring color codes on the pig tail to work out what wires had to go where on the current SID's pig tail and modify the car's harness to properly use the 4 button SID.

There are a lot of DIY ideas on the 'net on how to repair the SID display. might be worth a try to try a DIY repair and if that fails, send the unit off.

Thanks, Win_k,

I tried a couple of the DIY suggestions on my 9-5 displays ... with no success. I'll try with this one, but I expect I'll end up sending it off for repair.

Mike

Mike one of my colleagues sent his off for repair and was delighted with the job done and the fast turn around. Unfortunately I don't know who did it  ::)

I did send one from my 9-5 away ... it came back in a couple of days fully working with a new display inside.

I can't remember who did that either - I'm pretty sure it was an East London address.

It's not a major issue, so I'm in no rush, but it would be nice to have it done sometime.

Regards,

Mike

I know of two repairers that receive good reports

http://www.saabdisplayrepairs.co.uk (not to be confused with the singular and similar www.saabdisplayrepair.co.uk)

http://www.sidmaster.co.uk

My Dad just used sidmaster for his 9-5 ACC unit. Got it back in two days with a new cable etc fitted all working 100%. He was impressed with the service and my Dad is fairly hard to please!

It has turned out well.

I posted my dodgy display to SIDMaster on monday of this week, it arrived back with me on thursday - all pixels working.

I think it was £48 inclusive, so a bit cheaper than the others.

Take it apart and iron the joining strip worked on mine first time.

I tried that in the past ... my results weren't that great, some pixels were restored, but I lost others.

When you ironed the strip did you have the iron on its hottest setting? No steam tho for obvious reasons.  ::). As far as I'm aware you can iron it all day long without damage so can't make it worse. Good luck.
