Shelling out more...?
« on: 05 November 2012, 01:24:29 PM »
My local Waitrose (well, local-ish) where I normally fill up due to it being a couple of pence cheaper that anywhere else in the area, recently sprouted Shell branding in a big way, which I had not noticed previously.

Curiously, since that last fill-up, I seem to be getting worse average fuel consumption on my regular commute - by about 1.5mpg - even pussy-footing (stop sniggering at the back!).

Was Shell previously the fuel supplier to Waitrose, and has just had a bit of a publicity splash, or has Waitrose done a deal? And is my loss of economy just down to the changing weather?

Changing weather CitTone as mine runs much better on Shell and gives better mpg. Its averaging around 45 at the mo with mix driving in this damp cold.

Probably the cold air, the air is denser when cold and the ECU is adding more fuel to keep the fuel air ratio correct.

Not quite :)

It's the mass of air that matters to the engine output- so if it's colder you get less volume, but the total mass (and thus fuel added) is the same.

However during colder weather there are more thermal losses, particularly during warm up, so more fuel is burnt. Water on the roads also increases roilling resistance.

Difficult to check at the moment, with SID constantly switching to "Frost Warning" mode while I'm trying to keep an eye on the MPG!

I find my 9000 does more mpg on Esso 95 rather than any supermarket fuels. (Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsburys)

Tagging onto the thread.
During the summer commute to work, I easily got well over 40mpg in the Aero.
These colder days, and with rain, it isn't so easy.
