Upgrading to 314mm front brakes from 302mm
« on: 08 March 2018, 01:45:16 PM »
Hi all,

I recently got some 314mm front brake callipers and carrier brackets to go on the Aero at some point. At some point I will buy brand new 314mm front discs and pads to go with them.

It sounds like I will also need a 314mm back plate, and braided brake hoses.

Is there anything else I need to try and get from people breaking cars in the mean time to make sure I have everything to get these fitted when the time comes?

I've never bothered with backing plates when I've fitted bigger brakes... they are a lot of work to fit as it's pretty much the process for replacing the bearing hub.

I've not done the procedure on the 9-3 but on the 9-5 the carrier mounting bolts needed a little grinding off them to prevent them fouling the discs.

Bill Jones at Saabits is your man for braided hoses- they will be cheaper than OEM.

Yes. I've never fitted backplates on big brakes.  Done it on a few cars, from Morris Minors onwards!! :)

no need for braided hoses, tbh going from 302mm to 314mm is it really worth the hassle/cost for just 12mm bigger discs. Now if it was 285mm to 314mm or to 345mm discs/calipers..

Will the existing hoses fit the new (second hand) calipers?

Hose should fit.  Saab only list one hose, so it should fit all brake sizes.

I heard that the bigger brakes had a 12mm banjo connection, whereas the smaller brakes had 10mm.  But the parts list says otherwise.
