Just bought a new centre console lid to replace the badly ripped one I've currently got. Does anyone know how to swop the lock mechanisms over? My key won't operate the new lid. I was hoping saab would be lazy and have a generic lock for the centre consoles that all keys fitted!
I don't have a 9000 workshop manual. I only have a parts list. The lock is not shown as a separate part.
There seem to be replacement covers available. Can you swap the cover from the new one in place of the split one.
The old cover peeled off (just glued on). The new one is shiny walnut and didn't even want to try to get it off the console lid... so how to remove the old lock...? There is a hole under the lock - must have put it there for a reason. So a quick tap with a drift and the old lock comes out. I've discovered that there are 2 main parts - the lock cylinder and the black plastic locking "tab". When it comes free, the lock cylinder encloses small brass lock plates and tiny springs - which are easy to drop - care needed there. I found I could do the same with my original lock and swap them over - hey presto - a locking lid, but not without a bit of a problem....
Taking it apart again and examining the black locking piece, it has a series of bumps and ribs on it that give the lock a positive engagement when in the open and closed position - it also looks like it used to have a small plastic rib to hold the lock in place - It looks like I broke that bit off when tapping it out. So the only issue is that the lock sits in the hole - quite firmly and takes encouragement to get out - but is no longer held in place by the bottom black plastic piece. If I were to do this again, I'd put the key in first (to retract the lock plates) and try pressing slowly to remove the lock, rather than tapping out... It may be the case that you can't get the lock out without breaking the plastic tab and might need a new one each time. I bet these are hard to come by new nowadays! Hope this is useful to someone else someday. I could always pop a spot of glue to secure the lock to the tab.
Btw - I found the centre console lid fairly straightforward to remove. Drill out 2 rivets hidden behind the rear ashtray housing (remove 4 screws to access). Wish I'd worked this out before removing the whole centre console! :(. Gave me a chance to hoover out lots of dust and muck though!
