Title: Starting problem/high temp gauge
Post by: Big H on 23 August 2012, 10:29:26 PM
Hi there

I must be jinxed. Just posted over on 9-3 forum about my dmf and clutch replacement, and that the 9-5 passed it's MOT today.

Get it ( MMY00 9-5 2.0t estate) back from the garage, drives fine.

Get back in it this afternoon, only for it not to start. All lights coming on, sid says checks are ok, turns over but sounds like it's struggling to catch. Foot halfway down on throttle, seems to catch, then stalls. Do same again, foot halfway down, catches then when idling, revs drop slightly, then settle normally. Car runs fine after that. Starts normally.

Leave it for a couple of hours, then does the same thing again, only this time, the engine temp gauge immediately rises to sitting higher than normal, and the fan comes on after a 3 mile journey. It normally takes a while for the gauge to rise, and normally sits between quarter and halfway on gauge, and fan only normally comes on after a decent run.

The car has also been stuttering/hesitant/choked on coasting/slight deceleration for a while now. And has recently been feeling similar on acceleration. Not particulary noticable but bloody annoying.

I've looked at various posts, none of which seem to have the same symptoms. From my limited knowledge, i'm looking at Fuel Pressure regulator/ coolant temp sensor/ thermostat?

Any definite diagnosis or better ideas if possible. Cheapest first after the dmf replacement!!!

I'd suggest that you either have a head gasket that is on the way out or you have 2 different problems, for the running problem/starting problem I'd be looking at something more like the DI cassette or the crank position sensor and for the temp gauge that is more likely to be the sensor reading wrong but given the price of a thermostat and the sensor I'd be replacing both. I'd want to rule out the head gasket first and also make sure that the car has the correct NGK spark plugs fitted.
