Title: Abs sensor
Post by: geriatrix on 06 July 2011, 05:04:59 PM
Hi - Seems I need a front nearside ABS sensor for my 97 Aero. There seem to be two types, a post 96 type pn 4647038, and an earlier part for 85-96 models which is pn 4001459. I need the later type, but there's only the earlier type on Ebay right now. Does anyone know what the difference is?

I'd check a local motor factors, you often find they can be as cheap as e-bay and you don't have to pay postage, and sorry no I don't know the difference.

I can't see what significant difference there may be between them.

- the ABS control unit is the same for early and later models
- AFAIK the hub design didn't change
- the calipers are the same

I therefore suspect that the later part no superseded the earlier one, even though it isn't listed as such in the EPC i.e. the sensors are interchangeable.

Makes sense. I do know that the later ones have a brown plug, but dunno what colour plug the earlier ones have!

i think the plugs may be different .My 97 cse went through a lot of sensors.
The cables are coax (like tv cables)
and they break if you go over rough ground.
The pickups are usually ok .If you can replace the wires you can fix them.
My 94 aero is ok so  far but i take speed humps slowly now : )
Afaik the rear nearside drives the speedo .

Surely the speedo signal comes from the gearbox.

Agreed- it wasn't until the NG900/9-3 that the speedo signal started coming from the ABS unit IIRC.

The comment about plugs makes sense. If you're hand with a soldering iron this shouldn't present a problem though.

I can confirm that the only difference is the plug. Earlier ones have a round plug, the later models a square one. Change the plug and they are interchangeable.

The cheapo option is to fix your old one, the sensor is probably fine except for a crack in the cable, just at the bottom where it bends the most. Cut the cable between the two rubbers in the holding bracket near the caliper, get your soldering iron and some waterproof shrink tube, fit a new piece of coax cable (silicone is best) and run that all the way up where you connect it to the connector.

Thanks for this - it'll be Savage Saab doing the replacement, but I'll have them save the old one for me to have a look at, and possibly repair. DaviD J
