Title: Rear heat shield dropped on the Carlsson
Post by: sgould on 25 February 2026, 07:31:59 PM
Today I found that the heat shield over the rear RH silencer had detached and was resting on the silencer.  A quick look before it got dark showed that the fixings have corroded and fallen away.  I'm planning to refit with penny washers but the studs that made the original fixing have mostly corroded away.

It looks like a bumper off job, and hole drilling time as there's no room to get at anything next to the silencer.  I might try some plusGas type stuff, but I don't think there's enough thread, even if the nut comes off.

Looking at the bumper off job; it's not as easy as the front.  There are bolts hidden by the tail lights, so they have to come out. Looks like a job for a lot of sealant on refitting. :(

You might find these of use

I have used them a number of times to refix heat shields into place. You can leave the bumper alone  :)

I was thinking about some spire washers on top of penny washers.  But those do it in one go! :)

I've ordered some.  Thanks.

Oh, anf if the heat shield cover is lacking in heat shield, aluminium sticky tape from Toolstation does enough to allow the star washers to do their job

The shield looks fine. It's just the fixing that's failed.  But we will see.

By the time the washers arrive it will be cold and wet again :(

Well, the washers arrived yesterday.  The rain stopped at lunchtime. SWMBO got home. I let the exhaust cool down. And I found that the washers fitted and went on with hand pressure. Less than 5 minutes, including getting the foam mat out of the shed and putting it away again!! :)

Thanks for the tip!

I was going to take a quick photo, but the rain has started again...

Delighted it worked out well for you

First time I did that job I went through the joys of removing the existing M6 nuts. Then realised that they could simply be left in place

I did it without removing the nuts.  I thought I might have to, but with a big bagful, I thought I would try without and it seems to have worked.

I'm on my second big bag now. The first bag was bought for a Polo & when working on one of the 9-5's realised I had a quicker solution to reaffixing heat shields already on the shelf
