Thanks guys. Yes, as Paul says, on the gearbox casing. I haven't actually seen it yet but I can see where it is and the electrical connector.. Probably access from underneath. I'll try the connector first if I can get it apart.
There have been no symptoms of poor running at all. No indication that the speedo was failing: just didn't work one day. Maybe that means the sender is ok and it is the speedo end that's failed.
This car is a 2.3 Auto non-turbo. Maybe it is only the turbo cars that 'hiccup' when this sender fails............
