Turbo bypass valve

I had the car serviced at (the excellent, for them's as don't know) Saabtech @ Welwyn yesterday. They said I needed a new turbo bypass valve but didn't have any in stock.

sgould and I reckoned this was part no. 4441895 and duly armed I swung by the local place this morning, who did have and who fitted one. Only on checking the invoice I find it's part no. 9390022.

I can't work out from googling if 9390022 is a newer type dump valve, which replaced 4441895; or an older type dump valve, which should have been replaced by 4441895; or exactly the same thing with multiple model nos.

Can anyone clarify?!

Audax

It's listed as the older valve for the classic 900 and 9000. It was replaced with 4441895.

So, it might be that they're just using an old number, or they are providing another valve or they're supplying a Bosch part. Phone them up and ask?

I think that the later valve is supposed to be improved but I can't think that anyone will still have any of 9390022 in stock.

Just seen this.  Same as I said in the e-mail :)

Many thanks both. I queried it with them. They said they'd had this issue before and couldn't source the 4441895 so were supplying the other. Hmmm. I'm sure they've supplied a pukka part, and presumably a dump valve is a dump valve is a dump valve, but being me I shall fret that I have a superannuated, sub-optimal dump valve. Until I now doubt source a 4441895 that might to all intents and purposes be identical, but have 4441895 written on the box, and therefore make me content.

(Will - haven't had any email - ?)

The later number was unavailable last year for months so I can easily believe them that they are still difficult to get hold of. Personally I'd say they've done you a favour, it will perform identically so I really wouldn't worry, it's not like you'll be able to get the correct part anyway  ;D

TomPaine

Ah ok well's that's reassuring, thanks Audax. Perhaps I'll go out and etch 4441895 on it for peace of mind. :)

Audax

Of course you better report it to the insurance as it's a modification...  ???

(not really!)

Tom, I need the same job done but have gone for the 'temporary' bolt in the hose method for now. Do you mind if i ask how much this proper fix costs?
Think i'm losing a fair bit of MPG without a proper fix.

The "bolt mod" is nothing to do with the bypass valve. :)

The bolt mod is a way of disconnecting the fuel tank ventilation system when the non-return valves in that system fail.  On later cars Saab removed that part of the system....

The turbo by-pass valve is the one at the T junction on the front of the engine (towards the passenger side) between the metal pipe across the front of the engine and the inlet pipe.  See the attachment...

Changing it is just a case of squeezing the clips with a pair of pliers.  Takes seconds.

No need to worry! :)

Keep the bolt mod permanent!  Saab did!

Thats interesting. The garage implied it would significantly affect MPG. What is your opinion?
The price of replacing the pipe with the one way valves I hear runs into 00's :(

C.

The 2006 on 9-5's don't have the pipe with the valve in it.  So it won't do any harm as far as i can see.
