95 2.2tid PAS hose corrosion
« on: 11 January 2013, 12:19:45 PM »
Advisory that the old girl has a rusty PAS pipe. Is this a common problem? It looks a pretty expensive part and quite a lot of sweat blood and tears to replace, refill and bleed system.

Pretty common on older cars, yes. Looking at the service history of my previous 9-5 it went at ten years / 112k miles (age being more of an issue than mileage I'd assume). I had it sorted along with some other things (new engine breather hoses, intermediate oil change, MOT, so I can't accurately see what it cost to have fixed.

If the pipe is not leaking, it might be worth a coat of Hammerite, or something similar.

If it is leaking, remember it's just a hydraulic hose.  You don't need to pay Saab prices for a replacement.  Get a pattern part made up at your local hydraulic shop.  Someone like Pirtek, but check your yellow pages.  Or better still ask a local JCB driver and find out where he goes to get his hoses fixed.

Saab price is near £150 for the assembly.  I know someone who had a new part made locally, using the original as a pattern, for £35.

Don't be tempted to shorten the route of the pipe or remove the metal section.  The metal loop is there to act as a cooler.

There's a thought. We've a Pirtek up the road in Oxford, so may give it a whirl.

Progress report ...

Time for MOT on the old girl, so thought I'd ask the local lads to do something about the PAS hose and cooler loop. They duly disconnected eveything and presented me with a couple of bin liners full of hose and wiggly pipe.

I trotted off to Pirtek in Oxford and unloaded my bags of spaghetti. They sneered at it and told me to go away, nothing they could do, why had the garage taken it out if it wasn't actually leaking? Bah, humbug.

Now have a perfectly good old 2.2tid estate sitting on the ramps, immovable due to lack of steering. May be able to get it all back again, but it'll probably leak like a baby ...  >:( >:( >:(

All done, a bit of a struggle, but we can go round corners again.

Great! :) Hope it was cheaper than a new Saab part.

About half ... but you can't get the Saab part any longer.
