Trade in value
« on: 09 April 2013, 09:02:40 PM »
Just for laughs took the Aero to a dealer today and enquired about a part ex price.
I was offered 2.5k for my '06 Aero manual with 50k on the clock.

To be fair the guy said the car was exceptionally clean and that it was really worth about 4.5k.......he said if it was his he wouldn't take 2.5k for it.

I think in a year or so I will retire it for weekend work only!

That makes me fell a bit better. In Dec last year I was offered £2.5k unseen at a Skoda dealership down the road against a Lauren & Klement Octavia with all the toys (we were in the wife's car at the time) The next day when due to take a road test the Abingdon Road flooded and closed the dealership temporarily. That day, I just happened to look at Cumnor Hill's stock and found the present P & J. My other Saab was also 2006, with 107k miles and we got £2.5k for it.

I hate to think how little my car is worth. :(  Over 100k now.

If it breaks down in Spain next month, it would be cheaper to walk away and fly home........

Dealers will always give bottom dollar for cars, there view is they need to make at least 20% and if there is something that needs fixing that could take another 20%.

There is a shortage a good quality used cars at the moment, if you need to sell it quickly by all means go to a dealer but online auction sites will give you a better indication of what a car is worth if they sell.

Tonight I went to the local car auction with a friend who needed a car quickly, we picked up a lovely one  owner from new 03 reg Astra with 55k, £1025. The previous 03 Astra had double the mileage and only achieved £600.

At the same auction a few weeks ago an 2005 Aero 9-5 Estate with 98k achieved £1400, it needed some minor dents sorted but what a bargain. If I had the spare cash I would have bid but then it would not have been so cheap.

At the end of the day a car will only get what somebody is willing to pay for it. At the moment Saab is not good news in used cars but that means there are bargains to be had if you want a good late car or a low mileage early car.

Having just got my 200,000 miles on the 2.2tid estate I suspect it is probably worth a square meal at a fast-food joint ... but my depreciation this year will be splendid!

My 2003 (2004MY) Aero estate has 191,000 on it, and like you I laugh at the depreciation. Won't be long before I have to pay them to take it off me  ;)

But it still runs sweet as a nut and is priceless to me  8)

I sold my 55 Reg 9-5 2.2TiD Vector Sport Estate on Christmas Eve with 132k on it for £3000 with tax due a month later and 6 months MOT. I was expecting to go down to about £2500. I paid £3200 18 months earlier with 118k on it.

Car has now done 152k with no problems. I see it once in while in between its trips from Norwich to Brussels each week!

The Volvo V70 I now have is actually worth more than I paid for it. I spent £3150 buying it and have done a few bits and bobs - about 400 quid. Son clay barred it and chap recently offered me £4k for it. Not selling though as on motorway runs it does 57 mpg and has enough power for me at 163

163?   didn't know you were that old
 ;D

Yes, our Saab values are painfully low.....but it does make me think about holding on.   Quite fancy a change (will have owned this 3 years in summer, & my last 2 cars were Saab's I took over 100K miles), but probably just hang on.....
At least it's not going to depreciate much more !
