Auto transmission oil cooling
« on: 16 April 2013, 02:54:36 PM »
About to take the caravan away in just over a week, first holiday with this new (to me) car. I have taken the caravan out for a blast down the A34 to judge the feel of the outfit, well pleased with the stability etc (well, it should be OK as the only difference from the older car is the auto)
However, I am mindful of the advice given in the owner's manual with regard to towing caravans up hills and the suggested limits, including the advice to ease off if the overheat icon comes on!! While we are not considering gallivanting around the Swiss alps or indeed any steep British hills any time soon, I was wondering how good the built-in transmission oil cooling is, and if anyone has been tempted to fit any extra cooling. It doesn't look like there is much room around the power unit or rads though. The caravan is quite a light one, MTPLM is only 1100kg and the Saabs cart it along nice and rapid.

I towed my trailer tent to Engelberg in the Swiss alps and despite the steep hills, the auto light never came on. It was about a 120 minute trip. I guess it must have been pulling about 800 kg. One thing that did happen was that the brakes started stinking on the way down a particularly steep downhill and I had to stop to let them cool.

There were some threads on aftermarket ATF coolers on saabcentral. You could have a look. It was quite a few years back, mind.

Many thanks smurkenstein. I wont expect any problems then. I have been practicing my downhill 'manual' operation of the gears! They work well in scrubbing off speed.
Ta again

I tow boat trailers and what has made a difference is upgrading the brake pads to something with more temperature capability. Going down hill with 2500 Kg of car people and van is no fun when you run out of brake pedal. 1 hour job and is very easy to do. Do the fluid too while you are at it.
