Alarm Siren

On both the 2001 9-5 and the 2006 9-5 I'm getting the odd message and occasional whooping in the night. Time to grovel under the front of the car to get the siren unit out and change the batteries etc. Are these cars likely to have the units which can be easily taken apart or am I going to have problems?

The 2001 car should have a unit with screws to get inside.  The 2006 car will have one that’s welded and will need cutting open.

just had this same issue, if you dremel or saw the alarm apart you will get access to the circuit board, buy a kit from ebay and de-solder the three capacitors that the instructions advise, re-solder the way the instructions say and then either glue it together or use some kind of sealant, check the batteries with a voltmeter as you may find that they are above 3.0volts, so no real point in changing them. kit is here   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saab-93-9-3-95-9-5-Twice-Alarm-Siren-Repair-Kit-New-Batteries-Dated-04-18/121587966806?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

alarm is in the nearside wheel arch, under the liner toward the front of the car, its a 10mm bolt and a 10mm nut to remove it, wheel off and 8mm socket to remove the arch liner, one 10mm plastic lug at the very top

Thanks chaps. The 2001 9-5 is in for an MOT tomorrow so I'll get them to take off the alarm while it's up in the air. Then it's out with the soldering iron.

Someone on faceache is doing £30 repaired alarm sounder boxes with new batteries...

Simon at www.saabdisplayrepairs.co.uk used to do them but has found the repairs are not good enough for his lifetime guarantee, so he stopped.

Well, got me siren off, and it's sitting on the desk looking at me. It is the later model, so I'm going to have to attack it with my Dremel. I can see the glue line. Is it best to try and cut down into the glue line or just cut straight in to the cover? It's going to be a bit of a mess whichever way i do it ...

Most people cut through the glue line.  Remember that you will have to reglue or drill and screw, so you need to cut where there is some meat.

Well, I'm in without damaging the circuit board or anything but it's a bit messy. Once I have the new batteries and capacitors there will be a further progress report .... what fun! I will need a large tube of gloop and a couple of cable ties ...

The other option that I have seen is to buy a small plastic battery holder and solder some wires to bring the batteries outside in the engine compartment where they can be replaced easily if necessary.  Then you can use ordinary cheaper batteries.

The problem with that is getting a decent sealed box to put the batteries in.

Right, that's done the batteries and the capacitors. Now need to pop out for some gloop to gloop it all back together.

It's a fairly easy job, but a Dremel and a solder sucker are essential tools of the trade
