I could do with a bit of advice. The 2008 Aero has developed a bit of a whine, most noticeable when warm. Of course, the first thing was dropping the sump. The oil strainer was pretty clear, though there was nasty sludge in the bottom of the sump. (It was flushed when I got the car, but didn't drop the sump.) It has been cleaned out, had two engine flushes and refilled with good fully synthetic and a new filter. The oil pickup has new o-rings.
The whine was still there. Initially we thought it was the turbo, but we've not been able to identify the source as the noise can be heard across the engine. Disconnecting the auxiliary belt makes no difference, so not alternator. The mechanic contacted a Saab specialist who suggested a stuck chain tensioner is stretching the chain. How easy is it to get to the tensioner and guides, at least for inspection? Is this an engine out job, or can it be done in place?
He would like me to get it diagnosed by a Saab specialist who has more experience than him, but I don't know who to trust within easy reach of Scarborough.
