Non-starting

My 9-5 Aero has for reasons of its own decided to not start. It happens about once a month. It turns over and there is no sign of life. Call the AA and it will generally burst into life after half and hour and then run merrily thereafter.

I am mystified.

When this happened to me it was the CPS. People often say that that generates a hot-start problem - typically not re-starting at the petrol station etc - but that wasn't my experience. Just random mornings when it would turn over and over but not fire. I tried a new CPS (or to give credit where it's due, the AA man did, but I had bought one before I called him ...), and that fixed it.

Thanks Tom. A bit of Googling is suggesting the same thing. It only costs pocket money, but due to old age and no ramps I think it'll be a garage job.

The CPS is a good start.  My 9-5 struggled to start over an extended period.  Hot or cold.  Then recently it got me to Tesco when it decide to fail completely.  I had only been there a short while so I thought it might be the hot start problem.  So went and has a slow coffee, went back and it started - just.  I came home and changed the CPS and it's been fine since,

You can check the resistance of the CPS, should be around 860 Ohms although they can still be faulty and give a plausible reading here I think but if it's well out of spec then it's time to replace.

I checked the resistance of mine when I got it home. I let the engine cool enough to touch, but it was still warm.  Resistance was around 1100 ohms.  Spec is 770-950 ohms.   However the following day I checked the resistance on he bench, just out of interest, and it was 890 ohms.

Only 2 of the 3 pins will give a resistance reading across them.

The garage swapped out my CPS. The connector showed signs of having burned out. Not sure what this means in the overall scheme of things, but we hope for the best.
