whining noise when engine braking

Hi my Saab 9-3 (2002) 2.2dit has developed a whining noise when engine braking. Any advice as to the cause and how to fix this would be brilliant!!

Also is this model a chain cam?

Welcome! :)

I don't have a diesel, so I'm not able to help with the whine.

But the 2.2 diesel does have a timing chain.  The 1.9 TiD has a timing belt.
