Rear window edge trims
« on: 17 August 2014, 10:43:20 AM »
Hi All,
Need some advice regarding the rear window rubber surround trims that have fallen to bits. How is the window held in? Can the trim just be pulled off?
On mine the rubber itself has broken down badly recently, through UV degradation and exposure, as it lives outside all the time now. Do you even need the trim piece?
Can you buy new? Wouldn't happen on a 5...

Looking at WIS and making an assumption that you mean the rear screen and not the side windows it looks like the trim is fitted when the window is put in place which would suggest it can't be removed or replaced without taking the screen out. This will not be a simple task as the rear screen is bonded (glued) in place.

Reading a few posts on other forums it appears that the 'decor trim' can be removed without taking the screen out, which is excellent news. I might get brave and just remove it anyway to see how it looks. Got to be better than the crumbling mess there is now...

One thing I would warn of is even if it looks awful removing it may create lots of noise from around the screen, I'm not sure if this will be the case or not but having seen a few poorly fitted 9-5 front screens or where the trim has been missing from the front they make a kind of annoying constant whoosh noise like you get on an airliner.

Yes, know of that issue. Had it on my 9-5 Aero. The front screen had been replaced prior to me purchasing it. The seal never quite sat properly and there was a fair bit of wind noise at 110. I put tape over the seal temporarily to see if it eliminated the whoosh. It did.
But on the rear screen there is no air pressure so I don't see it being the same issue, but worthy of discussion nonetheless.
I'd like to put on a new one, intending to keep the car for at least another 5 or so. Love the thing to bits, TBH, and it is in much better nick now than it was when I got it.
'Some say' it is the quickest 3 in AUS. The jury is still out on that, but 'heck' it is exhilarating.
Just trying to keep it at its best for as long as I can.

After a bit of digging around it seems you can get the decor trim from the US for $103 on special in OEM genuine. Not too shabby at all.
