Saab 9-3 2005 Rear wheel speed sensor connector
« on: 30 June 2016, 11:59:19 AM »
Hi
I am going to exchange rear wheel bearings.
But I need an advice on how to disconnect the speed sensor.
The connector is quite sticky and I suppose there is something on the connector that has to be pressed down, pulled off or some thing similar.
Regards
PSchnell

I've moved this this to the 9-3 forum in the hope that you will get a better response.

I haven't done anything to this connector (yet!) so I can't help with the details.

Can I ask why you are changing these?  If you have play when you shake the wheel, it's more likely to be the "banana" top links on the suspension, which are a common failure point.

I will exchange the bearing because I hear a noise from the wheel, which I guess is a worn bearing.
It seems to be quite easy to do the unscrewing but very difficult (for me) to disconnect the speed sensor.

We'll have to wait for someone who has done it!   I looked in the Saab workshop manual and it just says "Remove the connector" with this diagram.

I think it's one with a clip that you release with a screwdriver by flipping it outwards and then the connector just pulls off the hub with some wiggling as they are tight fitting due to the waterproof membrane.

If you look in WIS for 07 on-wards there's a diagram of how to release the clip, the bearing/hub units are the same so I guess that would do if you'd be as kind to post a picture sgould.

Yes that shows more than the picture in wis for the 2005 model.
I will try that one of the next days - thank you!

Hi
Today I have look once more on the connector. Unfortunately, it is not as shown on the WIS 2007 model.
As shown on the enclosed photos (after I have the connector off) you must press down the flap in the middle.
This was almost impossible when the connector was on, so I had to make a small tool and  finally I got it off.

I'm not convinced that the earlier connectors are different, those connectors are liable to breaking which may explain why a tool had to be made to open it.

The connector did not show any sign of being broken so I believe that they are like this on the earlier model.
Also when it is shown in the WIS for the 2005 model. It changes in the WIS from 2006.
Anyway, I have my problem solved since I today has exchanged the bearing, and everything works fine.
Thank you for your comments.

Looking at the parts catalogue the number for the connector for all years of the 9-3 is 90564544 with a comment of "NLS use 93181685", that along with the rear brake hubs are the same for every year of 9-3 makes me believe that they are the same. The retainer clip from WIS which you release to pull the clip off is the part that appears to be missing from your connector hence why I suggest it could be broken as they are quite weak and possibly someone damaged it in the past while doing wiring checks as the wiring to the ABS sensors can and does fail.

You are proberly right. I just did not see signs of damage but it is all covered by a layer of rust protection material.
Broken wirers yes!
I also had a broken wire that I repaired without taken the connector off.
