Just had my bulkhead repaired

SAAB 900 1997 AUTO CONVERTIBLE

Just spent £500 on repairing the bulkhead and strengthening it, and it has to be the best £500 I have ever spent on a car! Sods law is SAAB UK sent me an e-mail back saying they would look at the repair and offer a discount (was going to push for full cost) after I had the work done, oh well!  ::)

It drives and handles 100 times better and its a completely different car to drive its fantastic! I never knew about skuttleshake or cracked bulkheads till I got this car, but I do now lol!

Hopefully that will ensure your 900 convertible is on the road for a good few years to come.  8)

I am planning on keeping it on the road for many many years indeed, such a lovely car! Needs a few other things doing, then I can concentrate on the bodywork.

Thank you, glad to be here and looking forward to being a regular visitor  ;D

Mine was done at Xmas - 2001 9-3SEt. I was advised to get a getting a steering rack brace to add rigidity. Also cuts down on torque-steer :)

I was advised that as well, it replaces the current rubber bracket with a flimsy piece of metal round it, with a steel alloy one or something, stops the movement of the sterring rack causing stress on the bulkhead. Also someone mentioned some kind of brace you can buy for under the car to hold the chassis in place and add even more rigidity. Skuttleshake brace I think it was?

The original kits were developed by Abbott Racing for the 9-3, but I think it fits the 900 as well. There are cheaper copies around, but I have heard varying reports on the quality of fit.

There is:
Steering rack clamp/brace
Subframe brace

Not so sure that the steering rack clamp reduces the chances of bulkhead cracking, but it certainly tightens things up. Our 9-3 succumbed pot the cracking was welded and then had the clamp added. Even the other half noticed the improvements!

I am bemused slightly that Saab built these cars with the known problem of the bulkhead issues.

I am going to get a clamp fitted as well.

Mine is the PFS copy and it has greatly improved things. Can recommend.

Hi, where are the trouble spots on the chassis? Has anyone got any photos?
Thanks Tim

Had mine done a month ago.
Fantastic improvement.

Car also now has the Abbot clamp and brace fitted, lowered 20mm on Konis, running 18" wheels and has a subframe brace (built by yours truly out of 1/4" steel bar).

This thing eats corners now :D
