Thermostat - how hard is it to get to?

Apropos of the "coolant temperature/guage problems" discussion below, I've decided it might be wise to replace my thermostat in case it is causing some of the problems my '97 Anni has.

Looks like a lot of plumbing around there! - Anyone done this joband like to advise?

Its ain't easy. Loads of pipes to remove and they were all stuck tight on mine with age. Mark their locations before you start and you won't go wrong when reassembling. The biggest problem is that there is very little space to do anything. Be careful not to drop the studs from the housing (the bottom one is a pig). The little hole in the thermostat goes to the top.
You will lose a little coolant so don't forget to top it up and then make sure you have  no airlock left by checking that all the pipes get to temp.
Its akward but not too difficult, allow a good hour and do it indoors if you can. You can do without rushing because of approaching rain or cold.

Some of the housing bolts can be difficult to access and a bit corroded in, particularly if the seal has been leaking a bit, but its not too bad.  While you have it dismantled with the stat housing and tubes out of the way it is a good time to remove and clean out the IAC valve as it is much easier to remove than when everything is in place.

IAC valve generally needs cleaning with a service to maintain a smooth idle, they seem to accumulate a bit of sticky muck.   If your car idles fine you may wish to take the 'if it aint broke don't fix it' view but if it is at all erratic it is worth doing while the pipes are out of the way as it is a pig to get out after (I just squirt carb cleaner down the top tube if I do not have the thermostat out).

Make sure you have the right thermostat and gasket.
There is a cutout in the top of the thermostat seat. If the gasket doesn't fill the seat fully water will seep out.

Go on, guess how I know that ::)
