Fuel gauge oddity
« on: 07 February 2012, 06:20:24 PM »
Hi all,

Just sent my SID off for new display etc etc and while driving to work without SID fitted my fuel gauge dropped to empty light came on then went back to original position three times. Now i know my horn, indicator click, reversing sensors are all off and that my dash lights are permanently on and the display for the oddometer is extremely bright. These i can put down to the abscence of SID but my fuel gauge Im not so sure. Anyone had this before when no SID fitted or am I being hopeful and probably have sender/sensor fault developing. See how it behaves when SID returns tomorrow.

Hi Steve,
who did you send the SID off to? Perhaps they might know the answer - they must deal with people asking these questions all the time.
Just a thought.

Mine does this very occasionally when filled to the brim. It's a fault with the sender in the tank, nothing to do with SID.

There's also a known fault where the baffle inside the fuel tank can come loose and interfere with the operation of the sender.

If I fill mine and then drive it until only a few gallons left and then refill it  mine is OK.

If I keep just putting £30 or £40 in it then the next time I fill it the gauge will do funny things until I have done 80 miles or so.

I now bite the bullet and always fill it to save this annoyance.

Mine does it if I top up or fill from the dregs.

Just one of those things you get used to - like remembering to remove the length of dowel used as an anti-theft device in the window slide channel of an old Mini, or carrying a mallet in an MGB to thump the SU fuel pump when the contacts burn shut.

Ah, happy days....

Hi all,

Had SID repaired by simon at Saab Display Repairs, fantastic service,  Sent Monday at 1700 hrs back in car by 0930 this morning and all working again. As for fuel gauge, i did put £20 of petrol in at my local Total garage on monday morning as was low just to get me too work which is unusual for me as i usually fill it totally from empty at Shell. Maybe the change of filling habit upset the sender, who knows but will keep my eye on it. At least ive got the DTE function visible again on my SID so should be safe from running empty.
Thanks for advice everyone.

They are also good for giving you false readings when on slight slope. It takes it ages to realise your then on the flat - nearly been caught out once - 35 DTE but whe on slope and moved off it said 125 DTE - splutter splutter b....dunk stop :(

I used Simon - sent mine on a Friday and had it back on Monday. He must have received it, repaired it and reposted it all on Saturday morning before the post office closed - now that is service!
