I suppose my next concern is that I get into the loom and find it's like a birds nest, particularly as the crimp is only 30mm away from the fuse board. That's not much slack wire - will it be difficult to separate the wires to work on?

If it's crimped 30mm from the fuse board then it could be jointed into the back of the fuse board itself. That's quite a bit of room, the old 9-3 is relatively easy to work on.

Can I just take it from the cigar lighter ?

Cigar lighter only has power when ignition on, IIRC, which is different to many other cars.  Don't know if that impacts you?

Thank you very much.

I'll have a look at the weekend. Having the amp fire up only when the ignition is on won't be an issue, so there's a possible alternative sorted.

If you need a replacement supply, the cigarette lighter is ignition controlled.  It's a mistake!  It will probably work, if the fuse is the right size to take both currents, but it will annoy you.

I used an ignition controlled power source for my digital radio aerial to save a lot of wiring.  It means that you will lose the extra amp when you turn off the ignition, but the rest will carry on working until you remove the key.  So if you are parked and sitting in the car, listening to the radio while SWMBO is off shopping, you have to have the ignition on fully.

I would find a permanent supply and stick an in-line fuse in it.  MAybe do this rather than play with the loom.  Who knows what else will fall apart when you fiddle!!

I was thinking that maybe this problem has happened before.  The 1999 car has 5 wires in the crimp.  The later cars only have four, with some of the wires splitting further along at connector H33-1.  Is 5 too many?

That was my worry - that working on the loom may well disturb more than I fix. Everything else works fine, so it would be a shame to create more problems.

I think I'll just get some power direct from the battery to test that it all works and, if so, run a direct supply in as you suggest with an inline fuse.

Thanks for all your thoughts and assistance. What a wonderful forum !!

Hi, I have a 2002 9-3 aero hot convertible, auto, and also have non working door speakers. Fuses in the fuse box for the radio and amp are good, so wondered if there might be an internal fuse in the amp itself which may have blown.
Question is, where exactly is this amp?? Mr Haynes says its behind centre console but have read that it is under a seat. Did take kick panel off side of centre console in drivers footwell, but could not see it there!!!

The 2002 9-3 shows the amp as being on the left hand side of the centre tunnel in the footwell.  But it could be the other side.... The workshop manual pictures are shown for left-hand drive.  I have no idea if the amp swaps with the side of the wheel.

You do have speakers behind the grilles, don't you?  All cars had the grilles, not all had speakers!

I assume that there are speakers there, as the fuses are in the fuse box for the amp, or would this be the case anyway, even if no amp and speakers were fitted?? Could it have been below the carpet, and not just behind the kick panel? all that seemed to be there was what looked like the heater and fan assembly.
Cheers,
Nick

I don't tink I can help with experience.  I only have access to the pictures and manuals for the 9-3.  I don't own one, never have.  I've only had a 9-5 or three and a new 9-3 Sport Saloon.

I think the front door speakers are bass only, so you won't hear much if you get down and listen without a big bass tune in the CD.

Which fuse are you looking at? The one I see that powers the amp also does much of the anti-theft/immobiliser system and remote locking exactly as referenced earlier in this thread by sgould.
