Scoured previous posts looking for a similar problem but no joy, 2004 150,000 miles never hiccuped in all my 100,000 except for a split intercooler hose and heater valve, last year  i noticed smoke on start up but very intermittently, now although still intermittent the car is consuming oil at the rate of 1l every 4000 m not drastic i know but for an engine that has not used that much in a lifetime worrying,  the map sensor looks like it has gone so ordered a new one last night,,, usual limp mode at high speed and over 3500 rpm   dont beleive these are connected issues but just in case, fuel averages 45mpg and 50 on a run

Yes, plugged in myself  p0105,,,,p0234, both i believe point to MAP as i am unable to locate any leaks in intercooler plumbing,  but the smoking  I believe is not related to this as it continued after previous cleaning of MAP over a year ago, and its the intermittent aspect that throws me, normally i would assume valve guides or turbo seals

I would investigate glow plugs. You are doing well if they are originals.

Had mine done and it made a difference at 128k and mines a 55 reg 2.2 TiD.

Not expensive to do

First thing i did Jim, but it was only as a just in case,, apparently GM decided only to utilise  them under 4 degrees so no joy there
