Just what I needed this evening - odd noises from the front
« on: 15 January 2013, 06:03:44 PM »
So, got back home at 5:30pm. It's dark, it's -2° and we're surrounded by snow. Had some odd noises from the front of the car at low speed when I stopped at a couple of junctions just before home. Nothing else to do but remove front passenger side wheel and investigate. Quickly discovered it was brake-related, and sounded like some interference between the backplate and the disc. After 30 minutes of waggling the wheel and turning it, prising the backplate away etc, a small piece of road grit approximately a 3mm cube, showed itself.  ::) There's a lot of it around here!

I had originally suspected that this was the issue, but felt honour-bound to investigate. I just wish the little blighter hadn't played hide and seek for half an hour!! At least the result was a bit of a relief.

Good result!

I've had grit get stuck between backplates and discs before.
Sometimes, and only if you have the safe space to do it, you can dislodge it and even eject the offending article by reversing at speed!

Yes.  Reversing has been successful for me too! :)

But it didn't work when the noise was loose wheel bolts.............

Same happened to me with a Primera, when a mechanic didn't tighten the rear wheel correctly.

I also remember my Dad's landcrab losing a front wheel in 70's due to loose wheel bolts.
