Cadillac BLS

Sorry about not creating a link - don't know how...

How about that for a car much in common with the 9-3? Engine bay pretty well identical; steering wheel, gear lever, handbrake, climate controls and SID ditto. Even though the body has a chunky appearance, it has much of the DNA of the Sportwagon in it. There must have been a big parts bin somewhere for them to raid!

The rumour is that GM still want Europe to take the Cadillac as a top model.  So they told Saab to develop the BLS.  Saab did this and used the opportunity to develop improvements to the 9-3 at the same time.  That was the facelift 2008 model.

The Cadillac was then styled and the suspension "refined" by Cadillac to suit what Americans deem to be what they think Europeans should like.  So it's a rare car, like all Cadillacs in Europe.

There is also this close relative that my in-laws neighbour bought.  He said that it ended up in a auction in Doncaster.  No one really knew what it was.  Dealers didn't bid and he picked it up for a song.

He reckoned it was worth every penny.  And emphasised the word "penny".  He went there to buy a Vectra, but they were going for too much! :)

Done some more research and found that they were made in Trollhatten so no too far to go for the parts bin!

Mostly 2008 on 9-3ss with an extra sprinkling of America.

They first came out around 2006 after Saab had to chuck a vast amount of money (somewhere around $140 million) on development so that Cadillac could break into the European market, I have no idea what GM were thinking of with this strategy as if they'd have invested the same amount of money in Saab R&D and marketing for Saab it would have made sense to increase Saab sales rather than bringing yet another brand to market in Europe. This is the major reason that I believe GM will eventually die, they had something like 15 brands at one point all competing with one another in very similar market segments with very similar models. Compare that to successful auto makers who generally have one or two major brands in each market with some differentiation between them in one way or another.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a BLS either as the prices are not that good compared to a 9-3 and they have enough different parts that I think servicing and repairs could be very difficult, I'd expect that the software needed to get a Tech-II to talk to them would be different than that of a 9-3 too. At least, before I considered one it would have to be very very cheap to be an option.

Thanks for this, been seeing a few of these and wondering why they reminded me of the Sportwagon.

Couldn't quite make the connection between a Caddy and a Saab.
