There's a swivel bearing at the top of the spring that allows the whole lot to turn with the steering.  If it seizes, then the top of the spring stays still and it will wind up and unwind as you steer.  This is one of the causes of springs breaking/unseating, which is what you had.

Ok

I shall let my mechanic know, he probably knows already but I'll make sure.

The spring has actually snapped right at the bottom and is unwinding itself off the base cup.

And they often end up puncturing te tyre side wall!

That why I had the rescue truck come. The spring is about 10mm away from the tyre. I was lucky this time.

Is it just bearing I need or the whole assembly?
Neobros list the whole thing for close to £100, eBay do the bearings for £18.50 with delivery

Genuine bearings x2 will cost about £46
Unbranded around £36

For the sake of £10 I'll get genuine
Is it worth getting the top part, number 11 in the diagram

CAn't say, I've never had ours apart.  The dealer did grease the whole area very generously at the last service though.  It was oozing out all round.

I've ordered the bearings, I'll put a smear of copper grease on the top plate before the mechanic has the car. He HATES copper grease so he'll need to clean the plate spotless before he puts it back on. ;)

I had the top bearings replaces on SWMBO's TID a few weeks ago .... £124.00 all in.

The car had been making a 'ding' noise from the N/S, when turning the steering from side to side while stationary or moving slowly forward.

Are springs different thicknesses ?

The rears which I've had replaced look spindly thin. Where as the new ones looked twice as thick. I couldn't put the 2 side by side for a proper comparison.

Attached is a picture of the springs that came off our 9-3 when the Hirsch stuff was fitted.

did the springs look different to you?

They do look stick thin compared to what I've had fitted

Those are the original Saab springs.  They were very harsh.

I haven't looked recently, but the Hirsch springs on it now could be a bit thicker, especially at the front.  No photos of the Hirsch ones.....

The new ones are a bit harsher than the old ones. But it sits level now with the same gap over all 4 tyres. It was a huge gap at the front before. It definitely feels better on the road and corners like Automan from the 80s.

It does feel a bit boy racer though, but hopefully it should all bed in pretty quickly.
