radio issues

 :'( hi all
my radio has started going wonky.
when I switch it on sometimes nothing happens. if I push the button hard it does occasionally then kick into life.
if I leave it switched on it will randomly start.
2002 95.
any ideas please.

Is the hard push on the button actually moving the radio in its holding cage?  If so you may just have a loose connection at the back.

Pull the radio out and check that the connector block and aerial are properly clipped into the back of the metal cage.

When I took my radio out, I didn't get the connectors clipped into the cage correctly and I had erratic connections.

A pair of radio removal tools.  Or bent cost hanger!!  But the tool has small hooks to help.  Needs a strong pull if it's not been out before.

Usually some 'extraction tools' available on that 'well known auction website' if you don't mind waiting for the post. That's how I got mine and they do the job.

Available at Halfords at an exorbitant price. And kept in locked glass cupboard at my local store!

If you remove the SID and heater panels - lever out VERY carefully with a fine blade at one edge - watch you don't scratch your fascia !!! - you'll have room to get a hand or two at top and/or bottom to help push the unit from behind. It'll probably be very tight in the mounting cage, I find using the wire handles isn't enough. And I get mine out around once a year (!) due to the retaining nut on the volume control gradually working loose. Again.

two inch nails fit the holes well and do the job of retracting the 'locks'

Then you just need to pull the unit (finger in cassette hole)

To remove stuff like that without damaging it, you use electrical tape over the surface to stop scratches and a thin bit of cardboard (like from a cereal box) to add extra protection if you're levering against it.

Last week I had to remove the audio unit in the OH's Sportka (to replace the heater control panel) I used a couple of small allen keys, did one pair of holes at a time. The keys were the kind with a small 'bullet' on the end to allow angled operation - these bullets clicked in nicely. Difficult to explain, sorry..... If you press the keys outwards, then use them to pull the unit, it works. Then the same for the other pair of holes and Robert's your mother's brother.

 ??? ok fellas I got those extractor tools and the unit came out well.
however I can not work out how to get the metal cage? it fits in out.
this appears to be the thing the wires are attached to.
having got the unit out (very pleased with my self) it occurred to me that if the fault is with the unit could I get a second hand one and just slip it in?

To get a unit replaced it needs to be divorced from the car it came out of with Tech-2 and it needs to be married to your new car, also with Tech-2. If it's faulty then speak to a friendly specialist who also breaks Saab's as they'll have a fair few of these kicking about and the necessary tools to do the job.

Use a wide screwdriver to ease in the sides until the four tags release.  Some tape to protect.  See picture.  There's also a brace at the back of the cage that pulls out.  Make sure it goes back into the slot.

Before going mad and getting a replacement, and now you have the correct tools for the job, may be worth squirting a dollop of switch cleaner on the contacts, and doing the hokey-cokey with the unit, which may solve the problem if it's just poor/dirty connection.

fixed it
took out the unit then the cage. cleaned the contacts and jiggled the wires (technical term) put it back together and it switched on straight away on several attempts.
does this now qualify me as an auto electrician?
thanks to sgould and citone for your help and advice.
next job replacing the fin.
how do I know if is connected to anything or if I could replace with a dummy?
