Wonderful timing! Erratic running on startup
« on: 28 April 2013, 08:42:49 AM »
Tomorrow we set off on a 17 day/2,500 mile road trip from home in Austria to the UK and back. Yesterday, for the first time ever, the Aero didn't seem to pick up properly when it was started from warm. It was OK after 10 seconds or so, and runs beautifully under normal circumstances. The EML light isn't on. I just have my fingers crossed that it's a one off.....I replaced the DI unit with a brand new one (genuine Saab)  a few weeks ago, so that's not the culprit. I really don't have time to spend hours under the car checking things out as there is too much else to do, I'm just hoping it doesn't get worse. Anything simple you'd be checking? I thought I'd check that the spark plugs are done up fully.

That my European breakdown cover was valid and in force and what the cover actually provided me with.  ;D

(I'd also be checking for air leaks under the bonnet, and putting a spare CPS in the boot, oh and there's a thing that if you turn a petrol 9-5 off and on again when cold quickly enough they'll run poorly for a few seconds before they sort themselves out)

When we had a similar experience it was air leak on the vacuum to the brake servo. Bly a problem on idle in neutral.

That at least is in order! I had to call them out recently when the DI went  >:(

I'll take a quick peek at the vacuum hose idea. Getting a CPS on a Sunday in Austria is a no-no, and we don't pass by any dealers AFAIK (most of our trip is motorway). I might get one when we hit the UK on Wednesday, the car is still on its original so as you suggest, it's something worth carrying.

No problems today, so I'll assume it was a one-off (or two-off) :o Perhaps the April temperatures of 30° confused it  ;D No such luck in Northumbria which is our first port of call in the UK, looks like being a tad cooler! Must remember to get a CPS as aspare.

Lovely and sunny today in the grim North East. Not too sure if Western Saab (off the A19 ) are still doing Saab bits but they're only just up the road from North Shields ferry terminal, assuming you're coming in from Ijmuiden on DFDS ferry from Holland. Update.... Western Saab NE12 9SW  0191 266 1150  are 6 miles north up the A19  from the Commissioners Quay ferry landing.  CPS is £92 from Jeff in the stores.

Didn't see your post till this evening, you hit the button with the ferry crossing but I'm now in Thropton for a few days. Haven't had any more problems so far but I'll make a note and check to see whether it's easy to get to when we head back down the A1 to Hull at the weekend. Thanks for the info anyway.

Terrific. The EML came on yesterday  >:( so I will try to get the code read at the village garage this morning, then perhaps a trip to Western Saab  ::). Seems to be running OK, so hopefully nothing serious  :-\
