I was driving along with the top down and the radio on.  The radio stopped and there was a puff of smoke from the instrument panel. May have been from the radio or somewhere close.

Now:

o the back lights on the SID don't work
o the SID reset to Jan 1st and Farenheit
 o all fuses intact
o rear electric windows don't work (fronts work)
o central locking doesn't work, remote button, or key in lock
 o roof won't go up

There are three questions:

1). What is the most likely component to cause this?
2) How can I put the roof up?
3) once the roof is up, how can I lock the car?

Thanks,

Mike

To update this ... Mr AA has got the roof back in place.

It seems when returning the roof manually it is not possible to close the back window section fully.  I have a 2 inch gap around at the back of the roof.

Also, I hadn't checked all the fuses, just the ones in the compartment by the driver's door.  A 60 amp fuse in the small fuse compartment in the engine bay had failed and blew again when replaced.

Regards,

Mike

U can lock the roof at the back. Push it down ad use the wheel brace in the boot to lock it.

Thanks.

Please can you go into a little more detail?

Where do you put the wheel brace in order to lock the rear of the roof?

Hi. I'm hoping the failed mechanic oops I mean AA man opened the tap on the pump before manual operation of the roof. If you have the owners manual its all in there how to do it if not ill try to find the pic I put on here.

Thanks for that.

The AA man did do the hydraulic tap.

I have found a manual online and found the picture you posted.  In the write-up it says:

Quote
14 Tip down the 5th bow/rear window as far
as possible.
Note: In manual raising it is not possible
to completely secure the 5th bow in the
recess of the tonneau cover.

So, not possible to lock down the back window section.  Or is the manual wrong?

This is the gap I get ... about an inch and a half all round the rear of the hood.  Its not water-tight nor secure.

I guess the part of the closing operation that does this last part is electrical.

Can anyone point me to a wiring diagram for this model of car?

Thanks,

Mike

I rekon if u get the wheel wrench in the lock in the boot and get someone to push hard down on the roof where the latches are u might get lucky. Have you checked the relays behind the rear n/s panel.
Burnt relay maybe but I'm not sure there's fuses there tho. I bet your miles away from me too.

I'll have a look - you might be right.  If I can close the top securely it'll take the urgency out of getting the repair done.

Do there relays control the top?   It is not, initially, a top issue.  The failure occurred when I was driving, not when I was operating the top.

I think there's 3 relays that control the top in there. Listen for clicking

I would if it was primarily a roof issue - the issue is an electrical fault that cause smoke behind the dash that took out a fuse in the engine compartment causing many things to stop working: radio; SID back light; read electric windows; central locking.

I'm fairly sure that when that fault is fixed, the roof will still work.

Mike

Fair enough. But have you thought it could have been one of the relays stuck when you first put the roof down then after a while of being stuck it overheated and the smallest wire in the chain I.e. near the Sid. By replacing the fuse or fixing the burnt bits you maybe only creating more problems.
If it was me I'd take the 10mins to check.

Yep, it could be one of the roof relays, or one of the many other relays or components in the car on that circuit.

There is nothing at all to suggest the roof relays over any other relay. Or component.

The radio stopped working, too.  As did the SID backlights.  I should be looking at them, too.  Actually, they're easier to get at.

Thanks for your help.

I've been hunting for a wiring diagram so I can follow what is connected to the fuse that failed.

I haven't found one online, but I've ordered a WIS disk from a well known auction site.  Hopefully that will help.

Mike
