How long does it take to get some petrol?
« on: 07 June 2013, 06:58:59 PM »
Tonight we did a trip to Tesco as I had a 10p/litre discount voucher. I'd been running the 9-5 towards very empty and managed to get 73l in the car (before the discount it was over £100 of fuel!).

Anyhow, as we sat on the forecourt we joined a queue of 3 cars at one set of pumps (2 were at pumps already) and waited in turn as the station was quite busy. So, we sat there, and sat there, after 5 minutes the second car in front had left (nobody was with either car when we turned up so we assumed they were paying) and the BMW in front of us went up to the pump, the car at the pump in front of that still had no sign of a driver for the entire time we'd spent there so far. So, I watched the BMW driver get out of her car and start to try to put fuel in, after another 5 minutes had passed she'd managed to get some fuel into the car, I commented to my partner that I wasn't an expert on BMW models but that if it was a 325i then it was probably petrol and that was why the driver was struggling to put diesel in it. ::) After another couple of minutes the woman realised what she had done wrong (after spilling about 1/4l of diesel onto the floor and over her car) and went to pay for the diesel and came back to put petrol in.

By now we'd been at the petrol station 15 minutes! (it wasn't like the other queues were much quicker by now) and finally the driver of the car in front of the BMW finally reappeared (what on earth they'd been doing I don't know) and proceeded to get into her car and then start playing with her phone, do her makeup and god knows what else and drove off. I pulled around the BMW and reversed back to the pump and put the 73l of fuel in and was done in under 5 minutes with filling the car and paying.

I also had the same experience about a month ago where we went to a petrol station and parked behind a BMW X3 at a pump as the driver was nowhere to be seen, after 5 minutes sitting there I managed to reverse back and get onto another pump which still had people who I swear didn't know what they were doing and take 15 minutes to fill up. When I got back to the car the X3 was still at the pump with no driver in sight and we pulled off to one side so we could have a drink and some young woman finally arrived back at her car *25* minutes after we had arrived at the station having done a small bit of shopping.

Is it just me that is unlucky like this? Is it time to bring back attended service? I usually fill up later at night as the stations are much quieter then but every time I try to get fuel during the day it turns in a complete mission!

Took me longer than that today.  I went to Tesco in Watford as I have a long drive tomorrow.  It was closed for refurbishment. :(  So I went to Borehamwood and back with "Refill Fuel now" showing all the way there.....  Probably only took 20 minutes but it felt like it was for ever.

Not just you - an all-too-common experience. I avoid those stations which have a mini-supermarket inside, having had similar experiences waiting behind people who, having filled, wandered in to do a few days' shopping. This was despite there being a separate bay for people just shopping, so anyone considerate could have just pulled about 20 yards fwd and out of the way.

There's a parking area for the people who want to shop or use the cash machine, but most people stay on the pump when picking up an odd thing.  But the people who annoy me are ones that use the "Pay at Pump" and then wander off....

I once had a really cheeky young woman in large 4 x 4 ask if I was going to be long filling up as she was in a hurry and could I move and let her fill up first as other pumps were full of people waiting. Hardly wonder as I had only that minute arrived to fill up a 7.5 tonne wagon with diesel that was virtually empty........................guess what my reply was..................................>>>>>>>>>and there was no swearing from me.......

To coin a phrase - thumbs up, Jim.

Years ago I would often fill up and pull forwards while I went to pay, so as not to inconvenience others.  These days I don't because I don't trust the surveillance cameras, they might just think I was a drive-away.

Close Geoff - I said 'Won't be a minute love, nearly done.....' with a smile as a car puled up close behind her and the other pumps were moving through. Shame the tank took so long to fill up and kept clunking if I tried too fast. Still it gave her more time to add some extra ugly paint.

Sadly I couldn't move the truck forwards whilst I paid as that would block the exit. When I'd finished she was fuming and shouted some abuse to which I then replied 'I should move incase I reverse instead of going forward - its not my lorry'. She went white as I put reversing lights on and moved an inch or so backwards........................stupid cow. Anyone else I may have been polite and told them I'd be ages. My mate was pi55ing himself in the cab. If she'd been in one of the other queues she'd have been gone ages before............................snigger

Hi All,
My pet hate at garages is the fact that most people only fill up with the pump on the side of the filler cap. Why oh why cant they extend the hose over the boot and use an empty lane. Do they not know the hose is long enough to reach? I can understand estate drivers not wanting to risk it and see if the hose will extend far enough. Enough said.

Having found a couple of stations where the hose wouldn't reach around a 9000 I always fill on the right side of the car now as it's a *real* pain when you find the hose doesn't reach...

I know it will happen to me one day, but at least you know of the possibilty and choose accordingly.
