A Bad Monday Afternoon!
« on: 07 October 2013, 05:06:15 PM »
Planning to replace the rear pads, discs and handbrake shoes tomorrow. Discovered that not only have I lost my workshop manual, the spare tube of copper grease seems to have gone AWOL as well ::). So I have just been to the local motor factors to get some more grease, and on the way there noticed that the engine management light had come on. After buying said grease, I then rather foolishly reversed too quickly and failed to notice the motor factor's rather large advertising pillar and managed to smack the driver's side rear bumper rather hard on the corner.  >:(  Doesn't seem to be any metalwork damage luckily. The bumper where it wraps round the side was rather displaced and is more or less back into place, but I'll have to take a proper look tomorrow. The only saving grace was that there was no-one around to notice it. After my exploit of three weeks ago, in which I managed to terminally slice the nearside front tyre right through, I'm hoping that things will get better.  This is no way to treat a faithful friend that is only 400 miles short of 200,000!!

No idea why the engine light came on, I've pulled the fuse & reset it, so we shall see. I'll get the codes read when I have time.

Thats three things.  Bound to be OK from now on.

There's been a spate of cracked DI cassettes recently.  Apart from mine I've heard of four in all in the last 4 weeks.

Hopefully not mine! The car broke down in January for the first time due to a failed DI, and I replaced it with a brand new one from a Saab dealer.

I had an error code while we were in UK in May, which was simply reset by a reader, and never recurred - although the current one might be the recurrence, can't remember the exact code but it was something like "long term fuel mix too lean". Will get it pulled when I have time.

That is the sort of day when you feel like going back to bed again and starting over.

I now have a cheapo code reader that lives in the car. It will also clear codes. It doesn't tell you what the codes mean, but I've got a full Saab listing on the laptop which tends to be with me on any lengthy journey.

Too true! Tuesday wasn't great when the desktop claimed it wouldn't boot up and had to do a system repair, which luckily was successful. Meant I could print out an exploded parts diagram of the rear brakes, with which I am now intimately familiar  ::)

What code reader have you got, where did you get, and how much was it?

My code reader was under £40.  They are a bit less now.  It's an Autop D900.  it's an all in one device.  No links, modules, laptops or anything.  Just plug in and go.

It can read engine codes and clear them.  it can also show some live data.  The data is nice, but tit would be better if I understood what some of it meant!!  ::)

The basics are revs and temperature, but there are also fuel trim readings and things like that.

It also shows you the VIN number.

Plug in, turn on, choose make of car. Choose "Read DTC's", "Erase DTC's" etc.

One of these: http://www.cardiag.co.uk/obd2-d900-canscan-live-pcm-data-code-reader-scanner-4.html  But I got mine from a different eBay seller.  Can't remember which one...  :o

This is mine, it works fine, but doesn't do live. In fact if you plug in with engine running it'll ruin it. But it does return stored codes and allows you to clear them. But no other information is given and you need a list of what code means what (Google liberally). Chaep and cheerful.

I have got one of these, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vgate-Scan-VS600-Any-Car-OBD2-EOBD-CAN-BUS-Fault-Code-Scanner-Reader-Tool-UK-/321223792680?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4aca6e1828

The best £30 I have spent for a long time, live data and will clear codes.

It is interesting to have it on while driving to see what is going on.

Steve

Thanks for the ideas, sounds like a good investment. I'll investigate the options. Luckily we'll be in the UK in just over two weeks so a good time to buy.

Yup, I use mine with a 2.2tid.  Fine as long as you have a code list to cross-reference.

I still have a proper GENDAN thingy on a laptop which I have used on both the 2.2tid and the evil 3.0tid which we do not mention in public.

Um, probably a daft question to the experts but where does one "plug it in"?

16 pin connector behind the cover under the steering wheel. Flap in panel in 9-5.  Just the cover in the 9-3SS.  Not sure about the OG9-3, but in the same area.

Some other makes of car have them in the centre console or behind ashtrays etc.
