Broken wheel studs
« on: 16 November 2013, 06:45:02 PM »
When I took my 9-5 estate in to Kwik Fit for two new front tyres today, they pointed out I had two sheared wheel studs. Something I'd never noticed. They obviously weren't new as there was an element of discolouration on the ends so not KF's fault.

Has anyone heard of this happening before?

From the look of it, getting it fixed could be a real bother. Is it something an indie could sort?

Any advice welcomed.

Cheers

steve

Do you mean the bolts?  They could be overstressed by overtightening, or they could be overstressed by being loose and hammered by the rattling wheel.  Loose bolts are reasonably common on alloys wheels.  They should be checked from time to time.

Any competent garage should be able to get them out for you using a stud extractor.

Thanks chaps.

You've sort of put my mind at rest now. I'm in contact with Humberside Saab about getting them to sort it.

Now with Humberside Saab.

They found another broken one on the other front wheel plus a crossthreaded nut. This, post new tyres on the front at Kwik Fit the other week...

Hoping the broken studs can be pulled rather than replacement hubs. :(

HS have loaned me an Auntie Edna Aero Saloon in the mean time. Very nice it is too!

Collected the car this morning. All fixed and shiny clean! Considerably less cost than I feared too.

Many thanks to Humberside Saab.
