Temp gauge
« on: 08 January 2014, 01:48:09 PM »
Right - we've had a change in weather and temps above normal..yesterday 13 in Norwich!

I've noticed recently that my temp gauge on 56 reg 9-5 Vector Sport TiD is sitting higher than it used to.

When I bought it a month ago the needle usually sat just below the middle at sort of 8.40 position and never changed on open road or in city. The last week or so the needle has been sitting at about 8.45 spot on and occasionally drops very very slightly when perhaps fan cuts in.

Am I getting slightly paranoid or what....................... the header tank seems fine and no leaks seen anywhere and no coolant smells.

The reason I ask is that upon purchase the garage had noticed a very slight weep around water pump and so to ensure no prob later they replaced it and did cambelt again using a Gates kit which I know are good quality and they were happy with so car has 12 months warranty

Yes!!   ;D

I suspect that changing the water pump probably affected the thermostat, (dirt, crud, etc. [back in my day it would be over zealous use of Red Hermatite]), causing it not to close fully. It now seems to have cleared itself..............

Could also have been a residual air bubble after the pump was done. They can float about for quite a while and can make the temp guage fluctuate. Mind you, the temp guage is not really measuring actual temperature all that directly. I have gone through several thermostats and sensors in the last seven years. But somewhere in the system there was always a slight leak. Either the pump seal was leaking, or the various little leaks coming out of pipe clamps or wherever. What is interesting though, is that when there are no leaks whatsoever, the temp guage sits dead square and never moves. If it moves even the slightest amount the system is not 100% sealed. And the aircon doesn't work properly either. If the guage drops to zero suddenly the system is leaking badly enough to lose pressure that it is trying to tell you to panic a bit. Which it does.
Temps to go over 110 degrees this week in sunny Melbourne for 4 days in a row this week. That'll test the old girl in a big way. We'll see...
