Triggers broom here................................bu99er...................

Not the tensioner pulley which leaves one more being the guide pulley just below the engine mount and guess what - it's on back order with no date; does that say something???????

It's only common to GM on the 9-3 but 9-5 is different so nothing swappable. Only bonus is you can get it with the special bracket it fits but is 90 quid!

There simply cannot be anything else on there to do it. It is to loud and clear to be anything to do with cambelt and that's silent on stethoscope!

4 days wait now!

Not surprised, I once went and picked up some "Saab" parts from the dealer, they had a GM parts sticker on them but underneath this sticker there was another sticker and the packaging said "Fiat/Alfa/Lancia" all over it. Anyway, I peeled off the sticker and there was an Fiat group part no. which when I called the Fiat dealer it turned out that the retail price for that part to buy over the counter from Fiat was lower than the Saab trade price!

Alfa 159 is based on a platform that Saab were going to use for the replacement for the 9-5 before the Insignia platform was developed. 159 is on my list of "yeah, I'd quite like one of them".

$£%^&@~......................**********

New pulley fitted and still noise there.................................argghhhhhhhhhhhh.

So far that's the aux belt, all 3 pullies swapped, alternator changed (made no difference) and still screeching noise there.

It can't be cambelt as no changes have been made and it's too loud for that and why would it happen all of a sudden?

Last call is the compressor but switching a/c on an off seems to have no effect what so ever even with temp turned down to LOW.

What could a main dealer do that my garage can't!!!!??? Apart from charge me £80 an hour.

Any help chaps would be appreciated before the men in white coats come calling

The engine can be run without the aux belt for a short while.  Try that and see if the noise stops.  If not, I think you have to start looking at the water pump and the timing belt.

But the noise is loud and sounds like the old fan belt noise. There's no sound from cambelt cover using stethoscope Will.

I had a thought - could it be the air con needs re-gassing to put lubricant in compressor bearings?? Would that make the noise?

The aircon compressor pulley has an electronic clutch in it, is it getting 12v down the wire to engage it.  If not, turning the ACC on and off will make no difference to the clutch or pulley.  Also if the gas is low then the pressure sensor on the system will prevent the 12v going to the clutch.

So if the clutch is out of adjustment and slipping, it might squeak.  Apparently it can be shimmed up to compensate for wear.

And the bad news is that the petrol 4 cylinder engine and the 4 cyl diesel engines seem to have a different aircon compressors and the  petrol one is the only one that has any instructions for adjusting the electromagnetic clutch...

This is what I'd advocate. In fact on the 1.9 it can be run without an aux belt for longer than a 4 cyl petrol as there's no water pump being run off it.

Well..............................I had chat with Saabtech and they said try without belt and they did. Noise was still there. Took cover off cambelt and all was fine in there.

All attention then focused on the turbo which they replaced in December with one with 3 year guarantee fro GAP Turbo's on Brum. It appears to be running fine most of the time but at around 2500 rpm the noise is constant. Sounds odd to me but it's all there is left so I'm speaking to them in morning but from cold it does whistle and perhaps the screech could have been one of the pullies (all now replaced) which masked this more.

Really pee'd off now though - what's the chances of it being turbo to be honest????????
