Well, it's coming on! I had to phone the dealer to book the car in for an examination of the front subframe bushes, and an investigation of a vague oil leak, yesterday but that seemed to go OK. I said to my wife that the receptionist has probably written down "English bloke bringing car in for checkup, something wrong but no idea what, we'll find out when he gets here"  ::)

I do know that a CPS is a Kürbelwellensensor - rolls off the tongue nicely  :P

die Kurbel = crank (note: standard u, not with an umlaut)
die Welle = wave (normally) but shaft in automotive use
der Sensor = sensor
der Kurbelwellensensor = crankshaft sensor

die Nocke = cam
die Nockenwelle = camshaft
die Kardanwelle = propshaft

der Antrieb = drive
die Antriebswelle = driveshaft

All these things can easily be found on leo.org.

I stand corrected  ;D

Leo.org is my usual source of info, I also have a copy of WIS that will run in either English or German (that is, when I can get the desktop to boot up), and that's mighty useful sometimes as well!

Absolutely Geoff! When you decide to live abroad, it's the little day to day things that suddenly become difficult, like trying to explain a strange knocking noise under the floorpan, you know, where the trailing arm meets the rose joint.......  ::)

The Germans officially withdrew their longest word by revoking the law it referred to!

"Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz"

Something about regulations for the testing and labelling of beef

I learned the legendary "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän" at school, but of course you can lengthen that by simply adding the word "widow" to it and then further extend it by adding "dog" to get the Danube steam ship company captain's widow's dog.  But then you could add "collar" or "flea" etc.  There is no end to this highly entertaining German sense of humour (or is it a sport?).

But then I found this:-

Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft

A work of sheer genius.

If you want to look up each word to get the jist, here it is split up.

Donau dampf schiff fahrts elektrizitäten haupt betriebswerk bau unterbeamten gesellschaft

You might say that, I couldn't possibly comment.
