We were lucky enough to convert our UK licences to Austria ones just before the rules here changed - ours don't expire!  ;D But as you get older, perhaps not such a good thing....

That was quick!  New three year licence arrived in post this morning. So I can terrorise the roads of N. London and Herts for a few more years!! :)

3 years - not very long - that'll go quick! Is this just a case of you sort of self certifying that you're okay to drive or is more needed?

It's all self certifying for cars and things.

Under grandfather's rights I had a licence for 3.5 to 7.5 tonne vehicles and minibuses.  I have given up those now.  Never drove anything like that.  If I wanted to continue with those, I would have needed a doctor to do some tests and sign some stuff.

Will, and others of a certain vintage, do you ever look back to when we were in our twenties and thought anyone in their sixties was really old?

There are too many old people about who turn out to be younger than me...

Age is just a state of mind -  I'm 68 next week, still working ( the first Mrs. Collywobble is living in Spain with husband number 3 and gets an income from the house I paid for when we divorced)  and live in a part of the country that is very popular with retired people.  The village I live in is full of people who have aged prematurely through not keeping up with modern life and not exercising their brains enough and driving small Kia's and Hyundais's - very badly!  The men tend to wear jackets and ties as everyday wear for some strange reason too! 

I suppose when I'm seventy I will be forced to have a Euro  photo driving licence and not keep the old green UK one that is now in many pieces!

My late father used to collect three ladies from the old people's home along the road, and drive them to church on Sunday morning. 

I went to help one morning as one lady was recovering from a hip operation, and Dad, at 83, felt he may need some help to get her down the three steps and into the car.  We got her and her friend into the car easily. 

Then the third lady asked us to help her down the steps.  I held one elbow, Dad held the other, and off we went.  As we got to the car, she turned to Dad and said "Thank you dear. I'm 68 you know!" :)
