A quick read of the Workshop Manual suggests that it's an air leak in the crankcase ventilation system.  It also says that it's not likely to be an air leak between the MAF and the throttle body.  If the crankcase ventilation pipes are OK, you need to investigate the fuel supply, pump and filter.

I think I'll start by cleaning the MAF sensor as that takes five minutes and costs nothing.

Well, new plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor. Still running a bit lumpily, but I only get the CEL coming on randomly. Sometimes it'll go for days without problems ....

Sorted. Crankcase breather hose had come unhitched.
