Underseal and waxoyl quote
« on: 15 February 2020, 04:31:49 PM »
Now that I've had the rear arches done, I wanted to look at getting the car waxoyled and undersealed if possible. I got referred to a garage on the edge of Coventry, and on Thursday, I took a drive over there to see them.

The guy got the car on the ramp and let me have a look round underneath. Whilst the body looks in good shape, the subframes and suspension, shock absorbers and brake backplates are all looking quite crusty. Still solid though.

He had a good look round, and said what they would do is waxoyl in all box sections (including sills) and inside the subframes. They would wire brush all the rust off, and then bitumen underseal all the subframes, suspension components and body (including wheelarches) as required.

I know someone who had a Transit done and said it had cost around 350 quid, so I was prepared for around that. Anyway, he came back and said there was a bit of labour involved, but I'd be looking at £120. I said "Is that all??!!!!  ;D ;D So that is on the to do list.

However, whilst under the car, we noted an engine oil leak. Now it has never dripped on the driveway yet, but the bottom of the engine had a film of oil over it. So I need to get that sorted first if possible.

I am hoping to get the throttle body cleaned, new bonnet cable fitted, and maybe get the car serviced at WMSS again, so will try and find out what that might be.

Have a chat to Chris Calvert.  He's "Zagato" over on UKSaabs.  His day job is de-rusting and undersealing Land Rovers, mainly,  but he does do other cars.  I think he charges around £600-£800 for a proper job and he has a very good reputation.  Anything cheaper may not be good in the long term.

Simply using a bitumen based mix over rust will not stop it coming through. To do it properly the underside would first need thorough washing/steam cleaning. Then treat all metals with a good quality rust converter. Then add the rust protection.

I did my own car using Flag products (Rust Converter and paint) followed by a Tetrysol wax protection, warmed and thinned with 15% white spirit. applied with a pressured garden spray. Ensure underside of car is thoroughly dry. A bit mucky but at least I know all the areas have been properly done.

I think Waxoyl has the brand recognition, but is pretty poor as a product these days. Dinitrol products seem to be much better regarded.

I've seen good information from Zagato on UKS and would respect his opinion too

Thanks all, there is another company more local that do different types of underbody protection. I want to get a quote from them too.

Chris Calvert at ccautomotive has stopped work, at least temporarily.  He is unwell.
