Saab's surprise PhoeniX concept car has scooped the Design Award in the Auto Express 2011 New Car Awards.

The Phoenix grabbed an impressive 30 per cent of the magazine's online readers' vote as their number one 'head-turning' car of the year.

The sleek concept car showcases design features and technologies which will shape the next generation of cars from Saab.

Auto Express Acting Editor, Graham Hope, said: "The Saab PhoeniX scooped the Design Award after topping our online poll.

"It was up against 39 rival concept and production cars, but won by a big margin, securing 30 per cent of the vote."

Commenting on winning the award, Saab GB Managing Director, Charles Toosey, said: "We are delighted that the PhoeniX has been awarded this prestigious accolade.

"The PhoeniX symbolises a renaissance of the innovative spirit and passion that drove Saab to build its first car, the iconic Ursaab, and we look forward to launching the next generation of Saab models in 2012."

It's painful this: the designs are winning prestigious awards, but the factory stays shut and the parts supply is getting patchier...
