MY '93 won't start
« on: 25 October 2011, 02:06:33 PM »
Trying to put the old car into a shed but can't start it for manouvering. Freshly charged battery but all I get is one click when  I turn the key and nothing else. All lights are working so I think its not the battery. I turned off the alarm with the key.
Engine won't even turn over...............Help!!!!!!!

Laugh if you wish, but tap the battery terminals that bit tighter, to make sure they have a really good clean contact:  I seem to recall on a car I had years ago, that there was a good enough contact to light lights etc, but not to take the surge from the starter.

Second thoughts, is the starter motor jammed?  have you tried rocking the car in gear?

Hope it's as simple as this!

Thanks,
I've tried these fixes and even tapping the starter. It didn't even try to start on a tow!!!!
It sounds like a relay is switching but not working or something electrical like that.

When you turn the ignition to on, do you get the coil energising noise?

Have you checked/changed the ignition switch?   They can do a lot of odd things when they go wrong, but yours sounds more like it could be a normal failure of the contacts.
