Saab winter wheel packages
« on: 26 October 2011, 10:41:13 AM »
Hi guys

Has anyone heard anymore about that deal on winter tyres and alloys??

My dealer says people have been receiving texts about it and they are looking into it but they believed it was an amazing deal of 4 alloys plus tyres for around £560.

Just waiting to hear from them and wondered if anyone had done the deal yet??

I saw an announcement.  It was a Saab GB offer.  But the one I saw was "From £559.95". And it mentioned steel wheels.

As it was "from......", I assumed that this was for 15 inch wheels.  I priced up a set of steels from http://www.mytyres.co.uk and found a price with premium winter tyres 195/65 15 for a little over £400.  So I went to them for a set on her 9-3 Vector as I assumed that the price would be relative as the size etc. increased.  I got some 215/55 16 97H Nokian A3 on genuine Saab/GM 6.5 x 16 steel wheels.

OMG! Didn't know anything about that! I just spent more than that on tyres alone plus the cost of a set of s/h wheels  :-\

Do the new line of Saabs suffer in the winter then ?

The 2 9000s and 900classic I've owned never had a problem in the snow and ice

Not really a problem with the cars per se but more to do with wheel sizes and tyre design that applies to all modern cars. The high performance summer tyres are completely useless in snow and ice. All weather tyres more like tyres of 20-30 years ago which I agree worked much better in bad weather. That's why the Uk seems to grind to a halt in a flurry of snow - everyone is tyred up for a race track!

Me too, though I bought my winter tyres before last winter. Paid over £500 for the set as that's what they were going for then.

Do remember my old 9000 being fine in the snow. 2 or 3 years ago in April it snowed catching everyone out. Remember passing numerous cars / vans the wrong way round/off the road on the A42 dual carriageway. I even stopped to help out with a big Nissan 4x4 that was on it's side. The 9000 wasn't invincible in the snow, but treading carefully I managed okay with normal tyres.

Having said that the winters have been worse since then. Aren't we expecting another bad winter? (Global warming and all that!  ;) ;D  )

Some time ago I posted this:

Today I was told that someone has recently discovered about 3,000 brand new Saab wheels in a very large crate! (mostly 16in ALU22 and 17in ALU55). Realising that these should be sold whilst there are still Saabs on the road, they have been passed on to participating Dealers for sale at discount rate. This year Dealers seem to be stocking winter tyres too.

I have had quotes for four 16in wheels and Hancook winter tyres for £620 in Yorkshire and ditto but Goodrides for £668 in Scotland. Vredesteins are £800 a set. All prices include VAT and fitting.

Quotes for 17in wheels with bargain or top name tyres are a bit more.
Contact your Saab dealer if you are interested.

I have done the £620 deal for my sister-in-law in Leeds
However, the alloys are even cheaper here: http://www.saabpartsonline.co.uk/index.asp?function=search

Wow, the alloys are ridiculously cheap for new genuine Saab items! Cheaper in fact than a full refurb on my existing wheels. Tempting.... 8)

It's the bargain outlet for Saab City, if you don't trust the manufacturer backed main dealer for the UK then who can you trust? ;)

Thanks for that - didn't realise it was a manufacturer backed main dealer.

Very good prices - have been looking at alloys since I bought my TiD, but mostly second hand rubbish on Ebay. Some of these aren't far off the price of second hand stuff on Ebay, and most on there are older / scuffed / corroded.

Sod's Law: that deal (& I do think that it is an exceptionally good one) came up  after I'd sourced two separate matching pairs of second hand wheels, driven to collect them, taken them into the wheel refurbisher, bought four winter tyres and paid the charges to have them mounted, balanced and fitted.  Best part of a month of faff and a total cost of?...

I did the same thing - not had the wheels refurbed yet; the wheels I bought were actually quite a bit better than my existing ones, so they got deep cleaned and coated with a couple of layers of Planet Polish Wheel Seal & Shine.

When I get back from the Gulf in Spring, I'll take my original wheels to Lepsons and have them do their magic

I've seen these on a couple of 9-5 Aeros - I nearly bought one which has winters on them rims - they suit the 9-5 2001-2005 very well.
