Oil Cooler Replacement
« on: 27 October 2011, 06:48:48 AM »
2001 9-3 2.0 lpt CV

I need to replace the oil cooler on my Saab and possibly the 2 pipes that run from the cooler to the oil filter housing. Do I need to drain the oil from the engine before replacing these items or will I just lose a little oil from what is left in the pipes and cooler, and then just top up after the replacement parts are fitted.

Cheers

Nope, you'll loose a little oil, but there's no need to drain the oil from the engine first.

Hello Horace and welcome to STT.

The last time I cx'd an oil-cooler was on an MG quite a few years ago.
It can be messy, but if possible, try to fill/purge the new cooler with oil before you fit it. This will help with it bleeding air out of the lines.

I'm not sure if bleeding is a requirement on the SAAB (maybe someone else has that info) but I remember on the MG, cracking open very slightly, one of the highest located unions on the pipes to allow air out and hence bleed it.

Thanks for the replies. All done now and leak fixed   :D
Took it to a garage to get another job done and mentioned it so they did it at the same time for a small premium, so saved me getting messy.
However its thrown up another sort of issue which I will put in another thread.

Thanks again.
