9-5 INTERMITTENT OIL LIGHT
« on: 06 December 2011, 07:15:01 PM »
I have just spent a fortune on parts on rebuilding my 2Lit 9-5 2003 engine. I have replaced, the two timing chains, tensioners and assocaited guides + oil pump + big end bearings + stainer seal+ breather pipes and when the engine was out a new clutch for good measure.

My mechanic has just rang me to say that on the first test run the oil light is coming on and off. Driving for a couple of miles after which it will come on for a while and then knock off again.

He is not sure what is going on.

Has any one got any ideas or advice?

Roy

I had this on a 2.2 when new.  They couldn't find a fault on the Tech 2 and changed a few bits (all the cheap ones).  Turned out to be a failing pressure sensor and was intermittent.

I know it's a different engine but it's back to the old is it plugged in and switched on.  Loose connection after the engine put back together?

Good Luck

Did you drop the sum in all this. And clean out the oil strainer on the pickup?  Did the pickup pipe get a new O ring?

Put on another pressure sensor. Either way you can rule it in or out at that point.
Don't discount a broken wire to the sensor too.
What grade oil is he using?

sounds like oil pressure switch,
did your machanic turn the car over with the di disconected till the oil light went out before he started it??
What was the reason for the rebuild? did something fail??

oil pressure switch is only about £10 so well worth doing it.

Thank you for your replies, to answer them;

Lucky egg

The engine was rebuild because of sludge, timing chain very loose and big end noise. I am not sure whether he turned the engine over before the oil light went out. But you are thinking of oil switch as well.

My mechanic was thinking along this same line, and willl prob replace the presurre sensor. He should have put in Fully synthetic. I wiill check

Yes the sump was dropped, the strainer was cleaned and seal O ring was replaced, It was yourself that recommended this. Thanks for that.

I will ask him to check for loose connections, good idea.

In summary I will tell him to focus on the oil presure switch and its connections.

sounds like it could be the culprit, and as you have had a sludge issue, it worth it considering the cost, i would even go as far to say if its not that still replace it.
HOpe you get sorted
Im still dealing with minor issues after my aero engine rebuild she's done 2.5k since i finished but well worth the time and expense.
