Stainless steel exhaust options
« on: 27 October 2023, 07:13:06 PM »
I'm starting to wonder if the rear end of the exhaust on my Aero saloon 2.0T is starting to blow a little.

I don't really want to be spending loads on an exhaust, but I also don't want to be getting some rubbish aftermarket system that will also be blowing before you know it. One option might be to buy a second hand stainless system, if I can find one.

Anyone got any recommendations, or advice on what to look out for, new and/or second hand? My car has the single tailpipe on the LHS of the rear bumper.

Why not buy OE equivalent from Bill or Neo. The originals last 15+ years, which seems plenty of time, without an immense up front cost ???

I'll consider anywhere if the price/quality is right  :Fawlty:

But the price of a stainless system can be a bit steep, so open to alternative suggestions!

I was quoted £560 for a stainless custom built system from longlife exhausts in May 2022 (I also have a quote from them in 2017 for £400). In the end I didn't go with it as I wasn't sure if I would keep the car to make it worthwhile, although I've been thinking that since 2017 as I bought the car in 2016 with the idea of having it for 4 years and moving on. https://www.longlife.co.uk/

Yeah that's my dilemma really.

I have no intention of moving the car on, and I am slowly working my way through fixing/upgrading things, but if one day the subframes need replacing or the turbo goes, or the body succumbs to serious rust, I might not want to keep paying to keep it on the road, so paying best part of 600 quid for a stainless exhaust now might not be money well spent.

I have messaged Bill at Saabits to see how much an OE quality exhaust would be, to give me a better idea. That may be the way to go ;) For now.......

Interestingly, the cost of an OE back box and centre section supplied only seems to not be significantly cheaper than a stainless system, which surprised me.

Be a bit wary of a cheap stainless system. Because they are assumed to be "corrosion proof" they are often made of thinner gauge steel.  Stainless is also harder.  Combined, it can make them quite harsh. The one I bought for a car a while back was very tiring on a journey.
