Was I asleep when that happened?
« on: 08 November 2023, 06:09:53 PM »
So the road tax reminder for the Aero arrived today, and I opened it, confident it would be around the usual 300 quid (ish) mark.

Now, I must have been asleep or unconscious when they must have announced it, because this year Matthew, my road tax is going to be £365 😳😳😳🥺🥺🥺

When did that go.up????!!!

I have a freind who scoffs when I say my VED is £675 for next year and I should get a newer car as she "only" pays £200/year and how I'd "save" money... when I point out that her car finance is over £700 a month it seems lost on her that it would be a very expensive way to "save" money. I worked out the other day that since I got the 9-3 in Jan 2016 I've covered 57,500 miles (ish) and it has cost me a total of about £345 a month, that's includes all fuel, buying the car, all maintenance, all parking fees, all insurance. Absolutely everything!

It’s an easy tax to collect.  There’s no realistic black market to avoid it.   A lot of other financial transactions can be hidden.  You only have to go to Costco and see trolleys loaded with industrial quantities of burger buns,  jars of gherkins, etc. all being paid for in cash, to see the reality.  How long would it take to consume 24 squeezy bottles of ketchup in a domestic situation?

I'm pretty sure when I bought the manual Aero in 2017, road tax was around £280, which was pretty good, I thought, for the kind of car. The autos were far more.

More recently, I seem to remember it being ariund £300 - 320, but the jump to £365 was more than I was expecting!!!!

The annual rise is in line with inflation, we've had a lot of that recently hence a bigger jump. I think the rates were:

2018 - £270 -
2019 - £290 - 7% increase
2020 - £300 - 3% increase
2021 - £315 - 5% increase
2022 - £330 - 5% increase
2023 - £365 - 10% increase

Ah OK, well that makes sense.

Interesting though that my Peugeot 107 road tax has never deviated from being £20 a year.

And I get what you're saying about people baulking at the cost. Working for a large UK based 4x4 manufacturer as I do, I had a look at the employee car purchase scheme a few years ago. To get something similar to our 2012 Qashqai+2 would have involved a deposit followed by monthly payments of £500 a month or more. Now I don't pay that to run 3 cars at the moment (insurance, road tax. servicing etc), so why would I bother?

30 years working there, and I'm driving around in a 2006 Saab ;) Stuff may wear out and need replacing, but it still works out cheaper than buying a new car that will only depreciate!!!

My lad priced up a new Vauxhall Corsa the other day - £20,000......for a Corsa??????????  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

I find myself surfing Autotrader for cars in the £1500 - £2500 proce bracket these days!!!
