Dashboard illumination

Driving home from our 'We are many, we are Saab' meeting yesterday evening, there was no dashboard illumination. The rheostat has always been flaky, so what do I look for, and how do I remove to clean. Is it an idea to by-pass this altogether? It has seemed to have been a redundant toy, in our hands.
