Title: Rear bumper protection ideas needed please
Post by: tobyd10 on 14 July 2012, 09:29:36 AM
Hi,
I'm looking for an idea that would help protect the painted top of my rear bumper from scratches as my hounds get in and out.
I have seen this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAAB-95-Estate-September-2005-onwards-rear-bumper-protector-/261045525660?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc7869c9c (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAAB-95-Estate-September-2005-onwards-rear-bumper-protector-/261045525660?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc7869c9c) but really trying to spend less these days so wanting a more economical fix.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks Toby.

Hi Toby.

What about fixing a sheet of thin(ish) rubber to the inside of the car that can then be 'flopped' over the bumper - or are the hounds already half out in a mad scramble before the tailgate is up?

Alternatively, you could get yourself a sheet of thin rubber and fix it on using something like a contact adhesive.
My father uses the former method and makes sure the dog stays in the car until the tailgate is up and the rubber sheet deployed

Alternatively:

Or better - and what I was explaining above:

This one - if its wide enough (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMPLEXION-BOOT-BUMPER-TAILGATE-PROTECTOR-NON-SLIP-/370492230118?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D600259960440679473%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D2%26)

You can make one easily.  Find some fabric - I used a cheap plastic "tarpauline"  but it occurs to me that the very cheap picnic rugs that are false wool on one side and waterproof on the other would be ideal for dogs.  Cut to a bit less than width of the lift up bit of the boot floor.  Get some duck tape. Open boot floor, tape edge of your fabric to the 'reverse edge' of the cross member under the floor.  Make a good job of it - I taped the fabric and the metal to get a good grip then added a third (maybe even fourth) bit to form the hinge.  If I recall, you need to chop a small bit of fabric out where the boot floor handle goes down.  Lasted me 6 years and I think only re-stuck it a couple of times.  No dogs, but loading/unloading and something to sit on when taking your walking boots off.

Not in use, fabric lies under boot floor.
Protecting bumper, just lift the boot floor a couple of inches then pull it out

I had a company V**vo etate once which had the flap attached by velcro so you could remove it altogetther for cleaning.  I think you can buy sticky velcro if you want to do that.
